Denver Trail Extension Project Underway

On March 23, 2009, the City of Azle began construction of the Denver Trail Extension Project. The Project will extend Denver Trail to School Street, including the construction of a bridge to span Ash Creek. Construction has an estimated cost of $4 million dollars with 50% of the project being funded through the Tarrant County Transportation Bond Program and the other half coming from city funds.

 Earth Builders, L.P. was awarded the bid as contractor for the project. Drivers are asked to be cautious while traveling on Denver Trail and Park Street. The estimated project completion date is March 2010.

 Project Timeline

March 2009:
                Earth Builders began clearing the dedicated right-of-way where the Denver Trail
                Bridge will be located 
April 2009:
                Continued clearing the right-of-way
                Relocated utilities away from the bridge
May 2009:
               Contractor began drilling piers.  The piers will be complete in July
 

June 2009: 
                Walls at the south end of the bridge are being completed
                Cut-through to Lakeview Drive began
                Installation of the first set of beams will begin this month
                

July 2009:
                Installation of second set of beams
                Contractor finished drilling piers
                Portion of storm drain system installed
                Precast panels set on first section of bridge 
 August 2009:
                
Set next set of beams
                Precase panels installed on second and third span of bridge
                Completed wall on north end of bridge
September 2009:
                Installed storm drain inlets
                Concreted two spans on the bridge
                Precast panels installed on fourth span
                
 October 2009:
                Began grading the proposed street along the north end
                Installed temporary retaining wall
                Cleaned debris under bridge             
November 2009: 
                Concreted last bridge spans
                Finished embankment at both ends of the bridge
                Began installing rip rap along north embankment
                Finished storm drain system along north end of proposed extension
December 2009:
                Began installing the railings along the bridge
                Began cement stabilizing the north end of the project
                Removed the drive approaches at Eagle Crest Villa 
 January 2010:
                
Began installing sidewalks along north end
                Finished railings on the bridge
                Finished cement stabilization along north end
                Cleaned under the bridge and removed the temporary culverts at the south end
 February 2010:
                
Began grading ROW along south end
                Poured drive approaches at city facility and Eagle Crest Villa
                Poured intersection at the Denver Trail/Denver Trail Court intersection
                Installed privacy fence at south end
                Began installing fence along north end of Denver Trail
 March 2010: 
                Finished fence along north end 
                Installed grass along the right of way 
                Finished parking lot along south end 
                Painted parking lots and street 
                Installed lights 
                Installed street signs

April 2010:

The Grand Opening of Denver Trail and the Sid Dechert bridge was held April 15. Shirley Dechert, along with her daughters, DeeDee and Terri cut the ribbon and viewed the unveiling of the plaque honoring former city council member, Sid Dechert. Mayor Braudis spoke to the crowd, including area officials, city staff and Azle citizens, thanking everyone involved with making the bridge a reality.
